Lisa Redford Lost Again ****
Parrot PR114 2005
The Norwich based singer-songwriter 2003 debut, Slipstream, garnered worldwide interest and fulsome praise from Radio 2’s Bob Harris. And I’ve a feeling there’ll be plenty more coming her way, because this album is even better. Lisa has worked with excellent musicians, led by producer Gabriel Minnikin, to come up with an alt country-tinged set with zippy melodies and excellent playing all topped with Lisa’s effortlessly pure vocals. The jangly nu country opener sets out her stall in radio-friendly singalong style. And Lisa moves easily from the up-tempo stuff to yearning ballad When You Go. LIsa has a full sound without losing her distinctive style. Minnikin has brought in plenty of instruments – even a theremin – to create textures which are varied and always interesting. All designed, in fact, to make you sit up and take notice – and so you should. Order via www.fishrecords.co.uk

Plain classy – roots and all
Lisa Redford and support
Norwich Puppet Theatre
The Puppet Theatre was crammed with fans of Lisa Redford (she of the American roots-feel ballad) and for the quirky lyrics of local singer/songwriter Andrew Taylor (support).
As the theatre filled up, the space tingled with a warm relaxed atmosphere: it reminded me of some of the best Norwich Fringe gigs in the company of legendary performers, like Helen Watson, for instance.
And Redford had some of Watson’s star quality: produced by Gabriel Minnikin, ex of The Guthries, her ballady songs had an effortless feel, as if they bounced right out of her without her having to try.
And Minnikin was on stage with her as she introduced numbers from her new album Lost Again, a departure from her well-loved first CD Slipstream only in terms of the full instrumentation that accompanied the songs. As before, playful American tones kept seeping through. And use of exotica like dobro and pedal steel gave some fine twangy textures.
Local strummer Andrew Taylor had a natural on-stage presence, and an observant eye coupled with a good, deep, fruity guitar technique.

Lisa Redford Slipstream ****
Parrot Records
When critics have reached for words to describe the voice of Norwich singer-songwriter Lisa Redford, “angelic” is the one they most use. So it’s only apt that this, her long-awaited debut album, can best be described as heavenly. The 12 tracks here showcase her songwriting talent and musical ability in spades. They include Turn Away (given a sneak preview on our Guide #1 sampler earlier this year), and the other 11 tracks are equally strong. Lisa has fleshed out her acoustic sound with the help of some excellent contributors, most notably Chris Ellis’ wonderful piano work on tracks such as Be Around and the hypnotic Blue. This album will grow and grow on you – buy it. It will be launched at Norwich Arts Centre on Tuesday. After that, via www.lisaredford.com

Classic Rock Society Review
Lisa Redford Slipstream Parrot Records Formerly one half of the acoustic duo which bore her surname, Norfolk based Lisa Redford is now a solo artist and ‘Slipstream’ is her debut release. Quite simply she writes great songs which are the perfect vehicle for her stunningly beautiful voice and the acoustic/semi-acoustic arrangements ensure that her vocals are kept high in the mix with her crystal clear diction and phrasing there for all to hear. She has the looks and the voice of Alice Peacock about whom we have enthused in these pages and also reminds me very much of Helen Boulding, another who has made a big impression.
Whatever the comparisons Lisa Redford is yet another name to add to the list of quality female singer/songwriters who are currently making their mark and she’s right up there with the best of them.

Lisa Redford Carolina Rain
Rating B
Lisa Redford recently released a collection of twelve acoustic gems all self-written and produced. She has one of those voices that make you feel good when you listen to her, her sound is upbeat as she tackles some of life’s little mysteries on the release.
Lisa hails from England, but her music could easily be classified in the American Folk Scene. The songs are slices of life and are looked at with a unique and inquisitive eye. Her ability to carry a line on the acoustic guitar is first rate.
Hope Never Dies allows Lisa’s voice to shine at its brightest. She sings of a period of unsurity but insists ‘My hope never dies.’ Be Around speeds things up a bit and is a song of the aftermath of a break up. She is facing her new life full of uncertainty and doubt, now that everything is different. Changing Times slows things back down and is an offer of hope to Lisa’s love that she will be there through the good and bad times.
Goodbye again uses a good guitar line to highlight Lisa’s expressive voice.
As a freshman effort Lisa creates an exciting CD that shows a lot of promise for her future success. It is a good listen and deserves some attention.

LISA REDFORD
Slipstream
Parrot Records
This debut album from the Norwich singer-songwriter is an absolute beauty. Lisa Redford is the city’s best-kept secret, but that could be about to change with this collection of twelve gorgeous songs that make an instant impression. Simple, pure, mainly acoustic, it’s an album full of highs, from the radio-friendly Carolina Rain to the heart-wrenching Red Eyes and the pleading Don’t Tell Me. Lisa Redford is a talent that just has to be heard by a wider audience. Highly recommended.
