Lisa Redford Releases Third Album ‘Clouds with Silver’

Lisa Redford “one of our finest singer/songwriters” (Bob Harris) returns with her eagerly anticipated third studio album CLOUDS WITH SILVER a glorious and heartfelt follow up to the critically acclaimed LOST AGAIN (2005).

Featuring eleven finely crafted self-written songs CLOUDS WITH SILVER takes Lisa’s blend of exquisitely melodic acoustic music to another level. With most tracks recorded live, the album is infused with a real intimacy showcasing Lisa’s soulful and powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics. From album opener, the upbeat radio friendly “Come Back Down”, to the sweeping uplifting “Live Your Life”, through to the plaintive yearning ballads “The Boy Who…” and “Makes Your Heart Sing”, the album is full of standout tracks. Other highlights include the dreamy “Call Me” and “NY Song” which also display her dynamic and evocative voice and immense gift for melodic hooks. The album closes with live tracks “New Years Day” and “Time to Grow”. Recorded live in the studio with just her voice and acoustic guitar, these two tracks totally capture the raw heartfelt emotion of Lisa’s live performance.

Recorded mostly in New York City at Monkeyboy Studios, the album is co-produced with respected producer and multi-instrumentalist Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Rufus Wainwright, Teddy Thompson) who also adds some subtle sonic dimensions on bass and keyboards. The acoustic songs are also enriched by some truly beautiful string arrangements. “Makes Your Heart Sing” and “Here Alone” feature strings by one of Nashville’s most highly regarded producers David Henry (Josh Rouse, Alison Krauss, REM) and New York based violinist Claudia Chopek (Ryan Adams, HEM) created the wonderful lilting arrangements on “NY Song” and “Live Your Life”. More of New York’s most outstanding musicians guest on some of the tracks. Superb drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright) adds his talent to the two full band tracks and the excellent guitarist Jim Campilongo (in Norah Jones’s The Little Willies) contributes his trademark Telecaster sound to the upbeat Americana track “When You Come Home”.

Lisa’s two previous albums SLIPSTREAM and LOST AGAIN, have gained widespread glowing print reviews and received airplay on radio stations around the world. Her track ‘Dragonfly’ was featured on a ‘Best of British’ special on BBC Radio 2 which showcased the Best British songwriters. Lisa has also built a reputation as a compelling live performer and, along with many festival appearances, has opened for many respected artists including Kathryn Williams, Brian Kennedy, Chuck Prophet, Devon Sproule, Kate Campbell, Laura Veirs, Jesse Sykes, The Handsome Family, The Deadstring Brothers, Boo Hewerdine and The Arlenes.

On CLOUDS WITH SILVER, Redford dramatically fulfils the promise of her previous albums with her arresting vocals, refreshing melodic sound and reflective lyrics. “Like all my work, this album  has been a real labour of love for me. From the writing and recording process to playing all the acoustic guitar and producing, I’ve been totally involved in every aspect” says Redford. “The songs are very contemplative and tinged with melancholy but, as the title reveals, they are full of hope and ultimately leave an uplifting and positive message.” Already in 2008 she has played some of New York’s most prestigious acoustic venues and had one of her songs, the acclaimed ‘Dragonfly’, feature in an independent movie in LA. With the release of CLOUDS WITH SILVER, further testament to her talent, Redford’s music is set to gain her an even bigger audience. Hers is striking music that is sorrowful and dreamy, but not simply for awash of studio atmosphere. Lisa’s songs, as well as her voice, have a tempered reverence that coats the sadness with an aura of beauty.

Maverick Magazine Review

Lisa Redford Slipstream Parrot Records 1132003

****

Former member of acoustic duo Redford, singer-songwriter Lisa Redford segues back into the scene with this enthralling debut solo album. Recorded in Norwich with local musos Rick Lee, Pete Lee, Chris Ellis, Julian Williamson, Jay Benstead and Dave Inge, SLIPSTREAM is an amalgam of heartache, fervour and triumph, sung with authority and passion. Modern country fans will love the opening title tune; the slide guitar is straight out of the mid-1970s Eagles’ manual. Beautiful vocal, even more stirring lyrics and marvellous playing.

Every song has its own source of pop effectiveness: The jangly Lot of Love is rootsy; Don’t Tell Me weaves a distinctly angular Carole King-ish melody around an end-of-relationship song-with pain and yearning so profound, you can imagine eyes moistening in the studio. The sadness and heartache rings true on the acoustic-based Silver River. These self-possessed relationship songs, with the striking colours and acoustic grooves that enhance them, do make for compelling listening. In a sea of smart female singer-songwriters, Lisa Redford is an admiral. AC

Lisa Redford Slipstream lyrics

Lyrics for Slipstream

Slipstream You wait around forever Never making ground You get caught in all weathers Never make a sound It’s all happ’ning around you But you’re in waters still You could be taking it further But somehow never will Don’t get caught in the slipstream Don’t ever lose your way Don’t get lost in a daydream That is where you’ll stay Cos I feel that it’s time for movin’ on But it’s hard when you know it could go wrong Cos you’ve almost making it through But it’s up to you You wait around forever But you’re in waters still You could be taking it further But somehow you never will Don’t get caught in the slipstream Don’t ever lose your way Don’t get lost in a daydream That is where you’ll stay Cos I feel that it’s time for movin’ on But it’s hard when you know it could go wrong Cos you’ve almost made it through But it’s up to you You’re almost making it, almost making it, almost making it through You’re almost getting it, almost getting it, almost making it through Don’t get caught in the slipstream yeah Don’t ever lose your way Don’t get lost in a daydream That is where you’ll stay Cos I feel that it’s time for movin’ on But it’s hard when you know it could go wrong Cos you’ve almost made it through But it’s up to you But it’s up to you © Lisa Redford 2005 Hand to Hold When the day fades into night And your world is dark and cold Don’t be scared You’ve got a hand to hold When all good times have passed you by Before you know, you’re growing old Don’t be scared You’ve got a hand to hold Cos I will be the one you need When you feel alone Just trust in me and we will see We will find that open road When all you feel are tears you cry Don’t forget what you’ve been told You won’t be scared You’ve got a hand to hold Cos I will be the one you need When you feel alone Just trust in me and we will see We will find that open road When all you feel are tears you cry Don’t forget what you’ve been told You won’t be scared You’ve got a hand to hold

Be Around I know you feel oh so very lonely I know you think no hope can be found Don’t lose faith cos through the lonely nights I will always be around I know sometimes things are not expected And you can’t get yourself up off the ground Don’t you worry cos in your darkest hour I will always be around Life doesn’t hang on a wrong or right choice It really depends on the way you feel inside It doesn’t matter anymore what all the people say It doesn’t matter anymore I know you think you’re just too tired of waiting For all your dreams to get up off the ground Don’t you worry cos in your darkest hour I will always be around I will always be around I will always be around

Turn away This could be the only time That I have you all alone We’re much closer than before Stepping into the unknown Now my head is full of words That my mouth won’t let me say In case my feelings will be heard Scared of giving them away Never felt this way before Funny how it means much more I don’t know what you want me to say And I’m afraid that you won’t let me stay Will you comfort me when I’m lonely Will you take me in your arms Or will you turn away? Not as cool as I appear There’s a fire down below And every little thing you do Makes me more in love with you Never let my feelings show But it’s time I let you know I don’t know what you want me to say And I’m afraid that you won’t let me stay Will you comfort me when I’m lonely Will you take me in your arms Or will you turn away? Don’t treat me like a fool Don’t want to be that hurt again But I think that you feel the same This could be the only time, this could be the only time Never felt this way before Funny how it means much more I don’t know what you want me to say And I’m afraid that you won’t let me stay Will you comfort me when I’m lonely Will you take me in your arms Or will you turn away?

Turn away, turn away

I Wonder Lying lonely in my bed Thoughts of you fill my head And I wonder, how hard it used to be All the feelings, emotions inside of me And I wonder Do you think of me? Nearly tried to make you see But when I tried the worse it seemed In my mind I couldn’t tell Anyone of how I felt And I wonder Do you think of me? Oh Oh never knew how much you meant to me Never knew if you cared, never knew, Oh Oh Now I smile at those days When I lived to see your face Can’t believe it felt so strong Wrapped in daydreams for so long

And I wonder, do you think of me?, think of me

© Lisa Redford 2003 Red Eyes You turn the lights down low Try to let me know What you’ve been thinking But I see it in your eyes Comes as no surprise My heart is sinking She’s got red eyes with a blue heart Always trying to impress Your thoughtlessness, is never ending She tries to understand You never take her hand So stop pretending She’s got red eyes with a blue heart You know she’s got Red eyes, eyes, eyes, eyes And she’s so blue She tries to understand You never take her hand She’s got red eyes with a blue heart You know she’s got Red Eyes, eyes, eyes And she’s so blue

Don’t Tell Me I’ve been thinking, the arms that used to hold me tight Now hang down by your side Sunday morning As you close the door without a word, What are you trying to hide? I’ve had enough of all the lies Now I can see it in you eyes Don’t tell me, tell me it’s all over now Cos I already know You look right through me and your thoughts are oh so far away You never let me in And oh so quiet and when you talk you mumble empty words That don’t mean a thing Maybe I’ve done something wrong Cos you’ve been distant for so long Don’t tell me, tell me it’s all over now Cos I already know Don’t tell me, love has lost it’s way somehow Cos I already know Don’t tell me, tell me it’s all over now Cos I already know Don’t tell me love has lost it’s way somehow Cos I already know © Lisa Redford 2003 Lot of Love You say that we should talk about it I say there’s nothing more to say We could talk about it but it just won’t go away, it’s over, it’s over I know it took a long long time to get to where we are And though it took a long long time we didn’t get too far So if you’re looking for a reason, you can see it in my eyes My life needs direction not compromise Yeah, my life needs direction not compromise You say that we should talk about it I say there’s nothing more to say We could talk about it but it just won’t go away, it’s over, it’s over I know it took a long long time to make us see the light And though it took a long long time for me it wasn’t right And if you think I’m leaving, you know I’m moving on So close your eyes and then I will be gone Just close your eyes and then I will be gone It’s gonna take a lot of love, a lotta lotta love It’s gonna take a lot of love, a lotta lotta love It’s gonna take a lot of love, a lotta lotta love… © Lisa Redford 2003 Silver River Summers’ been and gone Memory live on Thinking ‘bout the way it used to be The more and more I try To push the past aside The more I find it coming back to me And though a restless feeling grows It hurts too much to ever let it go Silver River flows by Doesn’t ask why It just reminds me of those days Silver River runs through My skies no longer blue Just becomes another shade of grey Now I’m living like A trailer for my life Waiting for my real life to start Too much time is spent Wond’ring where it went And I’m just left here where you are Still feeling like my life’s on hold Cos I miss the things we once shared so close Silver River flows by Doesn’t ask why It just reminds me of those days Silver River runs through My skies no longer blue Just becomes another shade of grey More and more each day I miss you so, more than I can say But I can’t help feeling lonely all the time You’re the only thing that’s on my mind Silver River flows by Doesn’t ask why It just reminds me of those days Silver River runs through My skies no longer blue Just becomes another shade of grey

Carolina Rain We lay beside the river We watched the sun go down You watched the sunset, I wrote in my diary Imagining the next town Then tomorrow we’ll be driving Doesn’t matter where we go Oh Oh Oh Never like before, never love you more Hope we’ll always feel this way Life is like a dream when you’re here with me Hope we’ll always feel the same In the Carolina Rain Then driving through the thunder We didn’t think we’d make it The cafe and the motel, I see them clearly now And in the waterfall I fell, we laughed so hard We laughed until we cried Hope we’ll never lose the feeling The feeling is so strong Oh Oh Oh Never like before never love you more Hope we’ll always feel this way Life is like a dream when you’re here with me Hope we’ll always feel the same In the Carolina Rain We won’t ever lose the feeling The feeling is so strong Oh Oh Oh Never like before never love you more Hope we’ll always feel this way Life is like a dream when you’re here with me Hope we’ll always feel the same In the Carolina Rain © Lisa Redford 2003

Blue

The wind blew hard, it was a stormy night The earth was cold, I had a chill inside Many a time I’ve been alone, but this time the stakes are grown I remember the gaze you left with me A sadder face I’d never seen Time was right for movin’ on, the wheel had turned and now you’re gone Changes come to everything You never know what each day will bring You left me blue You left me blue Sometimes you have to leave when you know the time is right But a time will come when you realise

What we had was worth the fight

Changes come to everything You never know what each day will bring You left me blue, You left me blue Calling you, calling you cos lovin’ you is all I know Calling you, calling you cos lovin’ you is all I know Calling you, calling you cos lovin’ you is all I know You left me blue, You left me blue

You left me blue

© Lisa Redford 2003 Hope never dies Sometimes when I’m alone There’s a place I go Among the olive trees I am free Staring at crimson skies Makes me feel so alive I can see for miles and miles But every time I try to lose myself and free my mind Peace inside is hard to find Blue seas so serene Clean air that I breathe Reminds me this is all I need Too late to change the past Our lives moves so fast Moments are what I hope will last But every time I try to lose myself and free my mind Peace inside is hard to find My hope never dies, My hope never dies… © Lisa Redford 2003

Lisa Redford press

‘one of our finest singer/songwriters’
Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

‘It was also wonderful to discover why everyone thinks so highly of Lisa Redford. She was lovely…bright, enthusiastic and talented. She works incredibly hard and takes a hands-on role in all aspects of her career, from recording, pressing and releasing her own CD’s to booking her own tours. .. her second album ‘Lost Again’, contains a superb version of Neal Casal’s ‘Fell On Hard Times’…just voice and guitar. She exactly locates and expresses the plaintive emotion of the song.’

Bob Harris, writing about Lisa and her live Radio 2 session in Maverick Magazine Issue 56

Praise for Clouds with Silver

‘Excellent new album…a real step up in sound for Lisa, the quality and profile of the guests are guaranteed to raise her profile both here and the US, and this is an album that will bring her to an even wider audience.’
Fish Records

‘a very strong and confident piece of work that deserves to be heard.’
Proper Music Distribution

Praise for Lost Again

‘a lovely album..I’m a big fan of Lost Again’
Bob Harris, BBC Radio 2

‘Lost Again’ really delivers on the promise shown on her debut disc – memorable songs, strong vocals and sweet melodies combine to make an excellent album.’
Fish Records – read full review here

‘one of the most captivating records of its kind that I’ve received for review this year…while Lost Again is manifestly a continuation in terms of Lisa’s deeply felt yet recognisably smart songwriting, and its basic idiom remains exquisite melodic country-tinged acoustic pop, the album is definitely and consciously more “produced”, with significantly increased instrumentation and beautiful (and imaginative) arrangements to envelop Lisa’s trademark stunning voice and acoustic guitar and complement her reflective, heartfelt and emotionally-charged (without being overwrought) lyrics…the end result is heart-meltingly good…Play this rapturously good CD just once, and you’ll definitely want to get lost again (and again, and again…) in its charms, I just know it!’

‘a well accomplished selection of songs which are personal, direct and easily accessible. Strong, distinct melodies give the tracks a sense of immediacy and are topped off by Lisa’s great voice and some excellent musical backing.’
Americana UK

‘my pick of the crop has to be Lost Again – Lisa Redford. I personally would put Lisa in the same bracket as country/folk singers Iris Dement and Nanci Griffith. I will be very disappointed if we do not get to hear more from this lady with the super voice. And her talents do not just stop there, all tracks on this album, except for one, were written by Lisa Redford. If you like good music, this one is well worth a listen.’

Roy Heap, Pedal Steel Magazine

‘a wonderful cd’

East Magazine

‘this album is even better..an alt country-tinged set with zippy melodies and excellent playing all topped with Lisa’s effortlessly pure vocals.’
The Event Magazine **** read full review here

‘it is that voice which is her crowning glory and sets her apart from her contemporaries. In a market awash with quality female singer/songwriters Lisa Redford is up there with the best.’ Classic Rock Society

‘Lisa knows how to write songs that linger on longer than the length of the CD..she writes great melodies and lovely refrains.’
MazzMusikaS, Belgium

‘it’s wonderful but I expected that of course’ Harmony Ridge Music, California, USA

‘there is no doubting the quality of writing and performance’
Proper Music Distribution

‘a terrific record that I love a lot!’
Alt Country Cooking, The Netherlands

‘We love the Cd and have been playing it on the programs.’ Folkscene, USA

‘seems to confirm the good things I said about the debut album so it will be a pleasure to play them in my radio show here…the songs are even easier on the ear than it’s predecessor!’
Radio Voce Spazio, Italy

‘Lisa Redford has a good voice (Bob Harris thinks so too)..it’s fair to say they’re generally pretty melodic..overall this is actually quite promising’
Country Music People Magazine – read review

‘Concerning Lost Again, the album from the young British Lisa Redford, we have to be
honest, that our attention was attracted by the name of the producer Gabriel Minnikin. The Ex-
Guthrie took the greatest part of all the instruments for his count. Therefore he’s responsible that the beautiful Redford stays at the good side from the frontier between commercial (pop) country and Americana. By using instruments like banjo, mandolin, accordian and lap and steel guitar, he shows the full advantage of Redfords voice. Breakable ballads (Dragonfly) relieved by Americana tunes (Lost again / Love you anyway / You will know) and some commercial country pop (Wildfire / The way it goes / Why). Especially the Americana songs stole our hearts.’
Ctrlaltcounty, Belgium

‘Plain classy – roots and all..her ballady songs had an effortless feel, as if they bounced right out of her without her having to try.’

’With the onslaught of new singer-songwriters around being touted as the ‘new whoever‘, it’s easy to be sceptical about going out to see anyone new to the scene or up and coming. However, at Manchester’s Night n Day on a cold March night, singer-songwriter Lisa Redford held an audience totally captivated and cheering for more. Making her debut at the respected venue, Lisa, who usually plays solo or with the brilliant Alan Cook on pedal steel and dobro, was joined this time by James Youngjohns on violin from the lovely Manchester based band Anna Kashfi. Not a total newcomer either, Lisa has already released two highly acclaimed independent albums Slipstream and the latest, Lost Again, which was produced by ex Guthrie Gabriel Minnikin. Both albums have received airplay and praise on Bob Harris‘s Radio 2 shows and contain all original material written by Lisa as well as a stunning live cover of Neal Casal’s Fell on Hard Times which appears on Lost Again.

Starting with the lilting melody of the catchy title track from the latest album, highlights in the set include the beautifully nostalgic Dragonfly with the combination of Lisa‘s finger picking and James‘ violin working especially well here, adding a moody and haunting quality. The song has already received much acclaim as it was featured on a Bob Harris ‘Best of British‘ special and it‘s easy to hear why. Lyrically, the song tells the story of a road trip and Lisa’s voice begins in a very low sultry tone during the verses before hitting an incredibly high falsetto in the uplifting chorus. Other highlights include a song from Slipstream, the wonderful heartbreak ballad Don’t Tell Me that really reveals the raw strength of Lisa’s powerful voice, and brand new song, the punchy Come Back Down, that has a very memorable hook. Lisa’s songs have a very classic feel, like she is carrying on that singer-songwriter lineage from the likes of Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. However, the songs also possess a strong Americana influence that makes her own distinct sound. Her songs to me evoke a female Teddy Thompson or Josh Rouse, and the afore-mentioned Casal, she shares that same gift for writing deceptively simple, gorgeously melodic and well-crafted songs.

Inbetween songs Lisa is charming, funny and very natural, as if she’s been performing forever. Like her American contemporaries Mindy Smith and Tift Merritt, she has bundles of charisma and stage presence, possessing that same ability to leave you spellbound by the emotion of her voice and onstage personality. Live, her voice really has immense power yet great control too and reminds me of the same heart worn tender vibrato of a young Emmylou Harris. Lisa’s voice is purer with a warm timbre, but has that same raw emotion in her voice that makes you feel she has lived through all the heartbreak she sings and writes about.

Having already supported the likes of Chuck Prophet, Eileen Rose, The Deadstring Brothers, The Arlenes, and Peter Mulvey, Lisa is most definitely one to watch. Don’t miss her performing at festivals this summer or on her future supports to Jeff Black, Corb Lund and Gina Villalobos.
