Weekly BBC Radio Music Feature, International Women’s Day Broadcast

As mentioned in my last post I’m part of a brand new fun regular music feature on Rob Butler’s evening show on BBC Radio Norfolk where I’ll be performing live acoustic versions of classic songs from the 80’s and beyond as well as Britpop tracks and Pride anthems. It’s been really fun to have a weekly covers challenge and so far there are three brilliant songs that I’ve played which you can listen again to via BBC Sounds:

Erasure’s ‘A Little Respect’ at 3:04 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0954y1c

A live Tom Petty cover from 3:14 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p095t6nt

Last week I covered ‘Jolene’ by the one and only Dolly Parton. Listen again via BBC Sounds at 2:41 here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p096dh55

A special programme for International Women’s Day:

Monday March 8th

I was recently part of another interesting creative project. Lightning Birds: A Game of Sonic Tag is a collaborative, fast-paced radio production, responding to the 2021 International Women’s Day theme of ‘Choose to Challenge’.

I was among 30 women artists & community radio practitioners asked to make a short, original piece from their own home, recorded within a day. Each woman responded to the previous work and passed their own original piece on to the next in the chain. Each will have only heard the audio that comes before hers – and won’t hear the others until the broadcast on March 8th.

This is a new collaboration which brings together women’s voices from a partnership of 14 community radio stations. The final one-hour programme will be played across the network on Monday March 8th.

I really enjoyed the challenge of writing an original piece in such a short amount of time. Being creative is an essential outlet for me, particularly during this time, and the process of following another piece, and having an idea to follow, really focused my energies and made me feel very inspired. I’m really excited to hear the final broadcast; it was great to be part of such a unique project for International Women’s Day. Below are the community radio stations that will broadcast the final piece – this includes my friends at Future Radio in Norwich.

Huge thanks to BBC Upload – a show that showcases creative talent of all kinds – for playing the charity song One in the Crowd and having me on the show to talk about its inspiration. Thanks also to the many radio shows around the country that have played and featured the song. It really means a lot and all helps to raise awareness – and more importantly funds – for rescue charity Safe Rescue for Dogs.

Thanks to the brilliant Belles and Gals for this lovely article and I also wrote a piece about the song for my friends at All Things Norfolk pictured here with best buddy Wesley.

New Charity Song for Dog Rescue

Safe Rescue for Dogs video

Please take a moment to watch this touching video that charity Safe Rescue for Dogs have put together, giving an insight into the amazing work they do rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming dogs from the UK and abroad.

I have written and recorded the music in the video to the words by one of the team Kelly Hare. On reading her touching and heartfelt poem I was moved to help them raise funds and awareness for all the hard work this very small team do to save dogs in dreadful conditions in the shelters.

If you would like to find out more and donate, take a look at their Facebook page. As a small charity they rely solely on the kindness and generosity of people to enable them to carry on rescuing and caring for the dogs. So lovely to see that there has been some money raised already.

I’ve also done a live acoustic performance from home on YouTube and written all about the inspiration and charity in a feature for All Things Norfolk

It was lovely to talk about the song and hear it played on BBC Radio Norfolk this week. Listen again to Rob Butler’s show here at 1.17. Also next week I’ll be part of a fun brand new music feature on his show, starting Monday with an 80’s cover.

Lisa Redford in Songwriting Magazine for the #keepsongwriting campaign

I’ve written features and interviewed acclaimed artists for the brilliant Songwriting Magazine. I have also contributed an articles in the latest Winter issue. Aimed at songwriters and their fans alike, expect up-to-date music news, reviews and artist interviews as well as lots of practical, hands-on advice.
