Maverick Festival 2017 Preview

Maverick Festival 10th Anniversary 30th June – 2nd July 2017

Americana is a genre that is currently thriving and for its milestone 10th anniversary, Maverick Festival, the first UK festival to celebrate the genre, presents a superb line up of quality artists and bands across five stages.  Over the past decade the festival has showcased exciting and authentic line-ups and received various accolades including making the UK’s Best Festival List 2015 in The Guardian, included in The Sunday Times Top 40 Festivals list 2016 and winning Festival of the Year for BBC Radio Suffolk last year.

The festival takes place from Friday 30th June to Sunday 2nd July in the picturesque setting of Easton Farm Estate, Suffolk.  Festival founder Paul Spencer wanted to ensure he had a special line up for this anniversary year and says, “We have looked back over the years and reached out to artists who particularly caught the imagination of past audiences – acts like The Henry Brothers, Stompin Dave Allen, Police Dog Hogan and Brooks Williams, as well as keeping a sharp eye on the new generation of American torch bearers like Grammy nominated Sierra Hull and Justine Townes Earle.”

Son of alternative country legend, Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle is considered a forefather of contemporary Americana and will be bringing his own raw, honest and personal mix of Americana, folk and blues including songs from new album ‘Kids in the Street’. As the festival coincides with Canada Day on July 1st, hotly-tipped Canadian roots rocker Terra Lightfoot will be helping to celebrate the occasion. As ever, the festival brings an eclectic mix of styles, reflecting the variety within the genre, with lively jazz street music from The Roamin’ Jasmine and old-time bluegrass from Hot Rock Pilgrims.

Another major highlight is in the Barn on Friday where Erin Rae & The Meanwhiles will be performing songs from lovely album ‘Soon Enough’ a moving blend of folk, Americana and Erin’s beautiful soothing voice.  Also signed to Clubhouse Records, an independent UK label with an impressive roster of excellent artists, are Maverick favourites Case Hardin and Don Gallardo who return to play the festival.  Legendary award-winning instrumentalist BJ Cole will also be returning with his band The Gold Nuggets, who will perform with many artists over the festival weekend.

On Friday The Peacock Stage is curated by The Americana Music Association UK, an organisation celebrating all strands of Americana, and has a whole host of acclaimed artists including soulful Americana songwriter Danni Nicholls, recently nominated for UK Album of the Year with her record ‘Mockingbird Lane’ at this year’s AMA UK awards.  On the Sweet Home Alabama Stage another UK female singer songwriter earning praise is Hannah Rose Platt. With storytelling at the heart of her moving Americana music, she will be promoting her brand new single ‘Chanel and Cigarettes’ released on Friday 30th June.

The festival will also be presenting films and workshops including banjo with Stompin Dave Allen and bluegrass with The Hot Rock Pilgrims. With a music and art workshop for children from Tammy Rochelle and Joseph Bamber of Nashville duo Chasing Summer in the picnic paddock, there’s something for everyone.
